Artist's Statement

Nothing fulfills me more than hours spent on art—doing it, promoting it, living it.  My favorite subjects are people and all living things, and I prefer to work from life.  I have participated in open studios with live models in many locations for over two decades.

One that I coordinate is the Whitmore Lake Portrait Group outside Ann Arbor.  My portraits express what I feel about the individual.  I have also combined my love of people with my love of nature into larger formats showing many figures enjoying beautiful Michigan settings.  My Millpond Series is one example.

I have taken many classes and workshops with internationally known artists, including pastel instruction from Alan Flattmann, Jerry Power, Larry Blovits and Janet Kohler.   My watermedia instructors include Charles Reid, Alex Powers, Jean Pederson, Carla O'Connor, Donna Andruccioli Vogelheim, Karen Halpern, Jeanne Ozment and Janis Madias.  I have also learned from Alvey Jones and Barbara Brown at Hollander's Book Arts in Ann Arbor, Diane Rath (oils), Stan Ozolinski (photography) and the Nikon School of Photography.  I am proud to be a science and arts graduate of Cass Technical High School in Detroit, which has a renown art department.  I graduated with distinction from Wayne State University as an American Studies major.  A career spent in corporate communications blended my love of words with photojournalism and the graphic arts.

I scour used book sales and also read new art books which I study daily, and each influences me.

I challenge myself with different subjects, materials, forms and techniques, and I love to experiment.  Recent efforts are combining my visual art with the written word in publishing books

and altering books.
